T-Mobile is mandating that customers on legacy plans migrate to modern rate structures to ensure full compatibility with its current 5G and 5G Advanced network.

This shift forces thousands of long-term subscribers off older service agreements, often resulting in higher monthly costs despite promises of enhanced network performance and benefits.

  • Forced migration: Many customers on 10-to-15-year-old plans, including legacy Simple Choice, ONE, and Magenta offerings, are being automatically transitioned to newer rate plans via notifications delivered through text and the company’s mobile app.
  • Price adjustments: While the company claims a large portion of users will not see a price change, some segments will face increases of approximately $4 per line, with other reports suggesting potential impacts on watch, tablet, and home internet lines.
  • Strategic justification: Leadership maintains that retiring these antiquated plans—some of which predate the 2020 Sprint merger—is necessary to simplify billing systems and provide users with modern features like improved video streaming, international calling, and increased hotspot data.
