Every time I order takeout, I do the same small ritual without thinking about it: scroll past three places that are too far, skip the one with the bad reviews, hesitate on price, land on something. It takes ninety seconds. It feels like nothing. It is, in miniature, a decision — weighing a handful of competing factors and picking a winner.

Google is quietly building a feature that skips that ritual entirely.

Code strings discovered in a recent Google Maps beta teardown point to a new capability called “Ask Maps to order food” — you tell Gemini what you’re craving, it finds a place, and it places the order for you, timed to be ready when you arrive. Android Authority uncovered the onboarding copy directly“Say what you’re craving, discover local favorites, and Maps will order for you — even while you’re on the go.” Outlets have been quick to frame this as the natural next step for Ask Maps, the conversational Gemini layer that already recommends restaurants. And on its face, it is a natural next step. But it’s worth pausing on what actually gets automated here — because it isn’t the busywork. It’s the choosing.

The pivot: browsing a menu was never just friction — it was comparison-shopping.

When you open a delivery app or scroll a menu, you’re not just killing time before eating. You’re running a tiny, real-time market analysis: this place is closer, that one’s cheaper, this one has better reviews, that one doesn’t have what you actually want tonight. It’s informal, it’s fast, but it’s still you weighing tradeoffs and arriving at a preference.

Handing that off to an AI agent doesn’t just remove the ninety seconds. It removes the tradeoff-weighing itself. TechRadar’s coverage notes that it’s still unclear whether Gemini will integrate directly with restaurants or simply route orders through existing services like DoorDash or Uber Eats — which means the “choice” you get to skip might already be pre-filtered by whichever partnership Google lands on, long before Gemini ever says a word back to you. You’re not comparing options anymore. You’re submitting a request and trusting the system to have compared them for you.

That’s a different kind of action. A decision has a visible shape — you can point to the moment you picked one thing over another. A query doesn’t. You said what you wanted, and something happened. The reasoning in between disappears.

Gadget Hacks points out that Google’s own research found 40 percent of people searching for food already know exactly what they want before they start looking — which is presumably the whole business case here: capture that intent before it leaks to a competing app. But it also quietly confirms the shift. The feature isn’t being built to help you decide. It’s being built to skip deciding, because for a huge share of orders, Google has concluded the “decision” step was never load-bearing to begin with — just overhead standing between a craving and a transaction.

So what?

None of this makes the feature bad, exactly. Plenty of decisions in a day aren’t worth defending — nobody needs to savorthe process of picking a delivery burrito. But it’s worth noticing the pattern this belongs to, not just this one feature. A growing share of daily life is moving from “decisions we make” to “queries we submit”: what to watch, what to buy, soon enough, what to eat. Each shift is individually reasonable. Collectively, they change how much of an ordinary day you can actually remember choosing.

The next time an app finishes a sentence for you, it’s worth asking which kind of moment just happened — did you decide something, or did you just describe a craving and let the system take it from there? They feel identical in the moment. They are not the same thing at all.
